Own Your Own Success

If you are a business owner you will know, it’s hard, sometimes it’s a struggle, it’s a tough road and things don’t just fall at your feet.  However, when they do you expect those around you be as excited about your success as you are.  Just a little, anyway!

It’s important to remember that success means different things to different people. What does success mean to you?  Having respect from peers?  Doing what you love so you can care for your family?

Recently, I was invited to be a speaker at the 2015 Aspire EA/PA Conference.  This is a huge thing to me and something I’d label as a success.  Growing up I didn’t think I would ever achieve what I have and had little self-confidence.  This is something I still tussle with at times but I’ve always had a never give up attitude and an ambitious drive to become the best person I possibly can.

I’ll be honest, when I found out that Conference NZ wanted me to be a speaker, I had to pinch myself.  The questions started rolling around in my head – is this reality? Why did they pick me?  Then the excitement started to hit and I wanted to shout it from the roof tops.  I told my family and a few friends and colleagues and that was when my heart sunk and I realised my success is mine and although others may be pleased for me in their own way, no one else was going to relish in my success more than me.  I became conscious of the fact that I didn’t need others to be happy for me, I needed to be happy for myself.

Here are my tips to celebrate your own success:

  • Make a list of all the things you’ve achieved in your life that you’re proud of and keep it in a place that is easily visible.
  • Reflect on the path you took.
  • Do something you enjoy but rarely have time to do it. Enjoy some ‘you’ time!
  • Share the news with friends and family but don’t expect a display of excitement from them!
  • Thank those that have supported you.
  • Support someone else to achieve success.
  • Tell the world about your success – write a newsletter, blog or post it on social media.
  • Pat yourself on the back!

Be sure to allow yourself small victories.  Don’t deny giving yourself credit for accomplishing something, no matter how insignificant it might seem at the time.  Be inspired by your success and celebrate like you deserve it, because you truly do!

How true is that!! I know exactly what you mean, my family still consider my business a hobby, and it wasn’t until recently that I realised it would always be a hobby until I changed my thinking and took my business seriously and took some risks. They are starting to pay off, though the road is never easy.

Keep at it, and well done on a fantastic achievement!!
